What is it about?

OKR is a simple and highly effective model that helps organisations to increase their performance, focus on what matters and achieve results.

What kind of businesses and organisations is OKR-model suitable for?

The OKR model is ideal for organisations seeking to make strategy implementation inspiring, for businesses aiming to accelerate change and enhance the ownership and motivation of their staff, and for teams in need of clear objectives and transparency to track progress towards them.

The OKR model is adjustable to the specific requirements of its users, regardless of company size or industry, making it flexible and scalable.

The OKR model is globally utilized by significant corporates (e.g. Netflix, Spotify, Google), start-ups (e.g. AirBnb, Asana, Buffer), non-profit organizations (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Charity: water), as well as public sector entities (e.g. Canada, UK, California, Finland).

Focusing on objectives and key results

A key feature of the OKRmodel is the setting of clear and ambitious objectives. Objectives are big goals that guide the organisation’s activities and provide direction. They inspire and motivate the team.

For each objective, concrete, numerical key results are defined. These results describe how progress is being made towards achieving the objective.

Bringing strategy to life effectively

The strategy provides the organisation with a direction and vision of where it is going and what it should be in the future. A good strategy allows the organisation to focus on what is important and what it wants to achieve, prioritise resources and set goals. Clear as a bell.

But it’s not enough to have a good strategy – you need to bring it into the everyday life of the organisation for it to make any difference. The vast majority of strategies and the change initiatives that go with them fail. Leaders around the world are struggling with this same problem. With more than 20 years of leadership experience, the problem is familiar to us too.

With the same 20 years of leadership experience and having completed several OKR deployments in our own and other companies and organisations, we can say that the problem can be solved. Results and growth can be achieved efficiently and cross-organisational, strategic development projects can be carried out cost-effectively using the OKR model.

OKR model roll-outs

The introduction of the OKR model is an organisation-wide process, often requiring an external facilitator. See for example Fujitsu Finland‘s or Saranen‘s experience of the benefits of deployment facilitation.

Every organisation is different. Each deployment project is always tailored to the needs of each customer. As a result of the project, your organisation has, for example:

  • an increased ability to integrate strategic objectives into day-to-day operations. We draw on years of experience in strategy implementation to apply the practices of the OKR model to your organisation.
  • a maximum of five objectives, derived from an existing strategy, towards which the organisation will start to move. We will facilitate the necessary number of workshops for management to select the objectives.
  • an understanding of the conditions for adopting the OKR model – how, for example, reward models and existing strategy will affect adoption
  • management committed to the change project. It is absolutely crucial that the leadership of the organisation is committed to working together and in the same direction during implementation. Together we will ensure this.
  • selected the communication spearheads to lead and communicate the change process internally. Successful communication will result in involving the whole organisation in the project.
  • formed a change project organisation. We help to assemble and train the team.
  • chosen the right software for your organisation to implement your strategy and monitor results. In our experience, it saves time and money to include software in the strategy implementation process. We will help and advise you on the choice of software if your organisation does not already have one.
  • the necessary number of tailor-made and facilitated workshops for management, setting a timeframe for the objectives.
  • the necessary number of workshops tailored and facilitated for staff, resulting in the organisation taking ownership of management objectives and proposing its own
  • operating aid for the use of the OKR model after a successful project.

A good strategy and its implementation are absolutely crucial in business. Saranen Consulting

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd

The Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) adopted the OKR method to put its updated strategy into practice. Henri Sora was selected as a key partner for the VTT’s OKR journey.

Fujitsu Finland Ltd

IT services company Fujitsu Finland Ltd began its transformative journey at the start of 2022. Firstly, the strategy of the conventional organisation was considerably streamlined. Subsequently, the new strategy was implemented, utilising the OKR approach. Henri Sora was recruited to steer and assist the OKR rollout.

The Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce

When the Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce commenced the implementation of the OKR model during autumn 2022, the organization had just formulated a fresh strategy alongside its entire workforce. The Chamber’s prevailing implementation culture provided a distinct advantage in terms of executing the strategy, backed by the guidance of Henri Sora.
